The EPA is releasing for public comment
the draft "Air Quality Criteria for Particulate Matter (External
Review Draft)." The purpose of this document is to assess
the latest scientific information on the health effects of
airborne particulate matter (PM) for use in the next periodic
review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for PM.
This draft report reviews new studies on particulate matter,
including studies that examine the susceptibility of infants
and children to health effects from PM, the cardiovascular
affects associated with PM, and the exacerbation of asthma
and other respiratory conditions by PM. Additional PM studies
currently nearing completion will be considered for the next
draft of the document, which will be released in mid-year
2000. The EPA will present its current draft report at a public
meeting for review by the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee
within the next several months. A future Federal Register
notice informs the public of the exact date and time of that
meeting. The draft is available on the Internet at: www.epa.gov/ncea
or on CD ROM by calling 919- 541-4826. Written comments on
the draft must be submitted by Jan. 14 to the Project Manager
for Particulate Matter, National Center for Environmental
Assessment- RTP Office (MD-52), U.S. EPA, Research Triangle
Park, N.C. 27709
